Karate and The Story About Kevin...

Jack is Super -Excited...
So I googled Cerebral Palsy and Karate this morning and came upon this article. It made me wonder if Jack could take Karate lessons. I am trying to find some summer activities for Jack that are less clinical and therapy oriented and more community and fun based! So far I am looking into horseback riding, karate, and a gym/tumble class.
Sometimes I get fed up with hospitals, doctors, nurses and therapies...no offense to any of you -- we LOVE you, but I think this summer we're taking a BREAK and are going to live life just a little more on the outside than the inside of clinical settings. Besides -- Jack will start FULL DAY Kindergarten in the fall. I will be lost without my little man for most of the day...although Morgan and I are sure to find something to do...lol

So that's my plan and I am sticking to it. I emailed a local Karate Studio asking if they could accomodate a disabled child in their class. I truly hope so...if not, we'll find someone who can! I'll keep you posted!

How exciting for Jack! I’ll keep my fingers crossed that you find just the right activity.
Maybe Bob can rough neck with Jack this weekend. We all know how PaPa likes to play on the floor with the kids.
Looking forward to seeing all of you.. and of course watching Morgan walk.
    Love & smooches,

  2. That sounds great! If that place can't accomodate, I am sure they would know a place that does. Can't wait to read about it & see Jack in his little Karate uniform.

I hear ya on the clinical/school stuff. I just went & checked out a fun mother's day out program. I called 9 places, only this one was willing to accomodate her. It is also full of girls (her class is mostly all boys except for 1 girl), so I hope she will like it. Next up here is to find a place that does dance or cheerleading that will take her.

  3. Gosh, i know what you mean. We spend a lot of time with the therapists and all. I'm sure when Charlie gets a little older he's going to want to do some more FUN stuff. Luckily, right now, he thinks a lot of his therapy is fun.

How cool would that be! That young man needs something that doesn't involve doctors, tests, more doctors and more tests. He needs FUN!! Good luck in finding something that he not only enjoys, but something that will ultimately help him, without him knowing it! It's about time Jack Riley took a vacation from appointments! You too Mommy and Daddy.

    Love you

  8. I went and read the article and I want Charlie to take Karate now too! I think we'd better figure out sitting and maybe standing first, right? I'm going to show this article to my husband too because he took martial arts for years and he's going to LOVE the idea. Ok, I'm definitely getting ahead of myself on this one.

  11. Sounds like fun! We are doing a Parent/Tot swim at a therapy pool in our area for 8 weeks, and are also looking into horseback riding. In the meantime, I found T-Ball for kids with disabilities! It already started, but that is something we are ON for next spring! I can't wait:)

Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend Wilhelm crew! It's going to be a nice one with great weather, unless the weatherman really messed up! Hope not! My thoughts are with you always,

  13. Can't help you in any practical way here, but as a long-term karateka (based in Sydney, Australia) I can guarantee you that karate is excellent for any kid with muscle difficulties. I have trained along side adults with CP, and while their style may have been a bit unusual, they were good (I know of one with a black belt) and you wouldn't mess with them. Excellent muscle work, good balance, good discipline, and brilliant for self-esteem. Any decent sensei should make you feel welcome, as karate is a martial arts where you "fight yourself", if you like, and therefore there are no reasons to exclude anyone. I would try to avoid Kyokushinkai style (but heavy on the full on contact for young kids), but any other karate style, or even Tae Kwon Do or kickboxing should be fine - it all depends on the teacher. If they are disciplined in their dojo, there should be no problems. Go and watch a session - if there is street-fighting arro type behaviour, run a mile. If the dojo is friendly and disciplined, and people are respectful to each other, go for it!
